Shea comes tumbling down

Stadium Page has some new pictures of the Shea Demolition. As you can see, the left field stands are gone. Right field is the next to go.

The way it’s been coming down this month, Shea will be totally gone in a few weeks.

See more at the Stadium Page.

Shea Coming Down Quick

Here are some birdseye shots of Shea and Citi Field taken today from WCBS 88. As you can see the upper deck is now a third down and that’s in a week, so in a few weeks the inside of the building will be stripped.

And Citi Field is looking sharp in the background.

Happy New Year!

Our friends at the Stadium Page have some new Shea demo pictures up from the last week. As you can see they are now taking down the upper deck. You can also see some Citi Field pictures as well.

It won’t be long until the old girl is entirely gone.

Our friends at the StadiumPage.com have new photos of Shea, Citi Field and New Yankee Stadium.

Take a look at Shea, where the top of the stadium is now coming down. Pretty soon there will be nothing left.

Neat stuff!

Changes To This Blog

I want to announce that John has left this blog for another venture. This was his decision and we wish him well as he pursues other opportunities.

That being said, I will keep this space running for the time being and over the next few months, I will be looking for other writers to join me as we bring you the Mets as they happen.

Right now, though, I will be running the NY Mets Report as the Hot Stove League heats up. Next month, I will be in Las Vegas for the Winter Meeting and will be blogging live from the Bellagio as the trades happen.

And for those of you who don’t know me. My name is Joe McDonald and I am going on my fifth season covering the Mets. Currently I am the Assistant Editor of Mets Inside Pitch magazine, the Managing Editor of NY Sportscene Magazine and the Editor of NYSportsDay.com. In the summer, I was always at Shea and this season I plan on being at Citi Field when they open the new joint.

Without any further ado, I would be more than glad to answer any questions you may have.

This Day in World Series History: The Mets take it all.

Knight sparks Mets over Sox.

Knight sparks Mets over Sox.

For the second straight game, the Mets rallied to beat Boston. This time, they overcame a three-run deficit to with, 8-5, to win Game 7 of the 1986 Series at Shea.

Third baseman Ray Knight hit a leadoff homer of Boston’s Calvin Schiraldi in the 7th inning to jumpstart a three-run rally‚ is named MVP. Schiraldi became the only pitcher to lost both Games 6 and 7, and Knight was named Series MVP.

What stands out for me about that night was that Game 7 was initially rained out and postponed until Monday, and went head-to-head against the Giants and Redskins.

Responding to some comments

Ramirez: He had to go.

Ramirez: He had to go.

Sorry … a little late today in responding to your comments from last night after I logged off.

1. chucky (about Manny Ramirez): I understand what you’re saying about burying grudges for the good of the team. But, I disagree that placating Ramirez would have been the way to go. I thought the Red Sox made the right decision to get rid of him. Even if it means not getting to the World Series (of course, we don’t know that, yet).

2. Jim (on dealing Delgado to Minnesota): The Twins might need a DH/1B type, but I don’t see them trading a top prospect in the offseason for Delgado, who has these red flags: salary, injury history, age and the question of whether his second half was a fluke.

3. Steve (The Original) (on Phillie fans at Citi Field): Tickets will be a premium next year at Citi Field. Plus, there are fewer of them to go around. If I had season tickets, I would sell my Yankee and Phillie tickets to pay for the whole package. I’m sure I’m not the only one with those capitalist leanings.-JD

Omar searching for answers ….

It wasn't a ``thumbs up'' day for Minaya today at Shea.

It wasn't a ``thumbs up'' day for Minaya today at Shea.

Mets GM Omar Minaya held court this afternoon. He stated the franchise’s mission statement, but said he had no immediate answers on the team’s most pertinent issues.

In summary: “Our goal is to get to the World Series, win the World Series, and continue to win it, but the bottom line is we can’t even get to the playoffs so we need to find a better way to work hard at this. … It’s been two years a row now, but we didn’t get over that hurdle. You never feel good when you get this far and don’t make it.”

This didn’t come out good, but I knew what he meant. He didn’t want to go into immediate rip mode.

On getting over the hurdle: “Why is it we can’t get over that hurdle? I don’t have an answer right now.”

On Jerry Manuel’s status: “We’ll review what we want to do. We’ll discuss his whole status. That’s going to take a couple of days. I don’t see it being done with a day or two. It’s going to happen sooner than later.”

No doubt the bullpen needs to be improved, but he didn’t lay all the blame on the pen:
“I don’t think it’s one area. To put it on one area wouldn’t be fair. You have to ask yourself how can you score five runs this weekend? It’s a team effort.”
