Just call him Mr. Opening Day. For the second straight year, Atlanta Braves rightfielder Jason Heyward hit a home run in his first at-bat on opening day — this one coming off Washington Nationals pitcher Livan Hernandez to lead off … Continue reading →

They're known as the "Amazin' Mets" for good reason. Throughout their 50-year history, the New York Mets have produced some of baseball's truly amazing moments. New York's baseball team from Queens has reached the World Series four times, won it twice in 1969 and 1986 and made the National League Championship Series three other times. But these five amazing moments seemingly are frozen in time for their magical quality. 5. Dykstra Goes Deep (October 11, 1986) – The Mets have had their share of memorable post-season home runs, but Lenny…

Spring training is a fun time for baseball fans. We get to follow newcomers trying to make the team, and watch returning players work on their form. With Opening Day set for April 1, the Philadelphia Phillies finally announced their final roster and batting order. Recently, the team said that Ben Francisco will start in right field and Jose Contreras will be the closer. The Phillies released Luis Castillo after a turbulent two weeks. More surprisingly, the Phillies said that Jimmy Rollins will be third, filling the void left by Chase Utley. As a Phillies fan, I am happy with the way the team handled these changes.

There are plenty of signs that prove spring is indeed on its way. The sun stays out longer. The sounds of birds chirping are beginning to fill the air again. Flowers are slowly beginning to spout out of the grass. And perhaps the biggest sign of all that the spring season is underway — baseball has begun again and opening day is officially upon us. On Friday, April 8 at 4:10 p.m., Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, reopens its gates as the team prepares to take on the Washington Nationals in the first home game of the season, ushering in the 2011 season.
