Morse goes deep twice, Nationals beat Mets 9-3 (AP)

Michael Morse hit a pair of two-run homers in the late innings and the Washington Nationals won their spring training opener by beating the New York Mets 9-3 on Monday. Morse's performance was perhaps overshadowed by the much-anticipated spring debut of Nationals prospect Bryce Harper, who struck out twice and saw no action in the field.

Mets fan reaction: Washington Nationals defeat New York Mets 9-3 (Associated Content)

The Washington Nationals defeated the New York Mets 9-3 on Monday afternoon. A full game box score and recap can be found here . Hope springs eternal at this point of the season, even for this pessimistic Mets fan of 20-plus seasons. With baseball back on TV, Mets fans can stop discussing Ponzi schemes and owners in debt and once again focus on the guys on the field. Since the outcome of a February 28 Spring Training game is absolutely meaningless, my normal "good, bad and ugly" review will take a backseat for the time being.

Young looks good as Mets beat Braves (AP)

Chipper Jones took a long slide into second base to break up a double play and his only thought was that he wanted to be able to get up. It was Jones' first time on the field since tearing the ACL in his left knee Aug. 10, an injury that ended his season and many people thought might end his career.
