Dan Graziano of the Star-Ledger wrote this great article on the Mets needs on the offense this off-season. The veteran baseball columnist goes into detail on what the Mets can get position by position.
As for the outfield, he says, “It’s tough to find a perfect fit here, and the Mets seem to want/need to spend their off-season money on pitching. But I think this is where Omar Minaya needs to get creative — to remember the work he did in the 05-06 off-season to create a deep, multifaceted lineup with a strong bench, and to identify that as the main difference between his outstanding 2006 team and the disappointing units that gagged away playoff spots in 2007 and 2008.”
It’s good suff and a must read.

Offensively, ther is Delgado, Reyes, Wright,Beltran and everyplace else. That leaves catcher, second base and the two corner outfild positions. Both Schneider and Castro are signed to return in 2009 as catchers; Church is penciled in RF (if he is healthy); and a platoon of Murphy and Tatis projected for LF. That leaves second base and Luis Castillo. If the Mets are satisfied there, no additional firepower will be sought for 2009. However, if the Mets 1) want to and 2) can trade Castillo for pitching (Javier Vazquez for example), that opens up the potential to add someone one the offensive part of the roster (Orlando Hudson, for example).
However, pitching should be there primary focus. Addressing the offense is a distant second. From there, addressing an outfield upgrade is further down the list. The Mets must address the biggest concern: PITCHING!!!
I have the utmost respect for Graziano, but this really isn’t so much of “a great article” as much as it is a reality check. Many of us have been saying the same things as Dan is saying … to ignoore the offense would be a huge mistake …. finding the right mix for the rotation and bullpen is paramount.
